Zone 3 Calendar - Vegetable Planting Guide

Zone 3 Hardiness Dates

Last Frost Date	First Frost Date
May 15th	September 15th

Stretching across the northern parts of the continental United States and southern Alaska, Zone 3 is a cold climate. With a last frost date in mid-to-late May and a first frost date of early to mid-September, the average growing season lasts from May through late August.

Very cold winters combined with short summers make for a short growing season that best accommodates [cold-hardy crops](/content/collections/cool-season-crops "cool season crop seeds"/index.html) and short-season varietals.

The growing season in Zone 3 offers an average of 90 to 120 frost-free days. To maximize your harvest, start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the final frost for transplant as soon as the ground has thawed. The planting schedule below can help you determine the best timing to start seeds, direct sow, and transplant seedlings.
