Zone 9 Calendar - Vegetable Planting Guide

Zone 9 Hardiness Dates

Last Frost Date	First Frost Date
March 1st	December 1st

Scattered across the southern United States but concentrated along the coasts, Zone 9 is characterized by mild winters and hot summers. The average last frost date is in late February to early March while the first frost date usually happens in early December.

With mild temperatures year-round, Zone 9 offers a long growing season lasting 9–10 months. Plant warm-season crops in the late spring or summer and [cool-season vegetables](/content/collections/cool-season-vegetables "cool-season vegetable seeds"/index.html) in the early spring or fall. Some cold-hardy crops can be grown year-round.

Frost dates vary in Zone 9, so follow a planting schedule adapted to your local microclimate for the best results. Many vegetables can be grown year-round in this region while starting warm-weather seeds indoors can help maximize your harvest. Refer to the planting schedule below for the best timing to start seeds, direct sow, or transplant seedlings.
